The strong roots of olive cultivation in the Maltese Islands are evident in many areas, particularly in the names of some villages and hamlets.
You will begin this exciting trail by visiting the remains of an ancient stone olive presser. This will add historical value to the aspect of olive oil in relation to olden times.
This particular site must have been a strategic area for many eras since Punic and Roman remains are evident in the foundations of a chapel built precisely over older ruins. You will then proceed towards a recently established olive grove where extra virgin olive oil will be tasted together with crispy Maltese bread and other savories.
The owner of the grove, who is a local farmer and olive oil enthusiast, will explain the combination of traditional agricultural practices to modern methods of cultivation. A grove with such an amazing view is hard to find all over the islands.
Following this, the village of Zebbug, meaning precisely ‘olive’, will be visited where majestic olive trees have also been utilised to adorn village villas and urban areas.
